Streaming Heart

As I’m running along the trail, nature presented me with this tenacious foam heart, dancing in the current of a small stream after a rain storm. I watched it for about five minutes and wondered how long it would continue to hold its shape. For weeks after I noticed other heart shapes in nature. Were they there all along or did the foam heart awaken my senses?

What causes the foam to collect in the stream? Water molecules are attracted to each other and this attraction creates tension at the surface of the water, often referred to as a thin "skin," which allows some insects to glide across it. When leaves, twigs or other organic substances fall into water and begin decaying, they release compounds which breaks the surface tension to allow air and water to mix and create bubbles. These bubbles collect as natural foam.

"Keep close to Nature's heart...and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." - John Muir

Go outdoors and see what nature wants to share with you today. Allow nature to awaken your senses!

  1. Thank you for posting the wonderful video. I often see hearts in Nature and photograph them. I take them as a calling card from Mother Nature herself, continually reminding me the nurturing and support I seek is right in front of me. I need only to recognize it. I am continually in awe at the magnificence of Nature.
